Minutes of the High Plains AMS/NWA Chapter Meeting

09 April 2014

The High Plains AMS/NWA Chapter held a face to face meeting in Norton, KS on April 9th.  This gathering started at 11:30 AM, with a fine presentation by John Stopkotte, the SOO from North Platte, Neb.  John’s topic was “Use of ZDR to anticipate tornado genesis”.  He showed several examples of recent tornadoes, which had very short warning lead times.  With the use of Dual-Pol radar images, John showed how some of the tornadoes spun up in as little of 4 minutes.  The ZDR product can help identify this spin up.  Increased shear promotes hydrometeor size sorting, and can be seen in the ZDR product.  He also showed examples of when the forward flank region can often reveal signs of increased inbound winds, prior to the signs of tornado genesis.  Many of these radar features using Dual-Pol products will need to be close to the radar site to identify them.  One of the things to look for is the Forward Flanking Region containing mostly large rain drops, thus high ZDR.

Then we held the meeting after the presentation and before our meal.  The meeting began at 12:45 PM, with 25 members present.  Scott Bryant from Hastings, Neb. gave a treasury report.  Since our Jan 8th meeting, there was $0.72 in deposits, from 3 months of interest, and $120.00 was spent to reserve the Lark restaurant for the upcoming High Plains conference.  There was $5,712.06 in the Ledger, $1810.00 in the Jim Johnson Scholarship fund, with $3902.06 in the Checkbook.  2014 Dues were collected at this meeting.

Scott also reported on some of the High Plains conference to be held Wed-Thu, Aug 6th and 7th.  This conference will be held at the Hastings College.  The registration fees will be $75 for most attendees, $35 for students, and registration for student presenters will be free.  The Hastings NWS office has organized a couple of planning committees.  They are allotting $4300.00 for this conference, with $1400 for the Programs committee.  The speaker for the evening banquet will be Rick Smith, WCM from the OUN office.  Hotel rooms have been blocked for this conference, and reservations are needed by July 7th.  More information on the HP Conference can be found our website, http://www.highplains-amsnwa.org .  Conference Registration will be posted to our website soon.  Each office is asked to send the list of attendees to Steve Eddy or Rick Ewald at the Hastings NWS office.  Scott Bryant is the new webmaster for our Chapter website.  Many thanks and much appreciation go out to our long time webmaster, Jared Guyer.

This meeting ended at 1:20 PM.  The next meeting will be between June 24th and June 26th, with Mike Kochasic the guest speaker.  Details will be sent out later.
