Minutes of the High Plains AMS/NWA Chapter Meeting

06 Aug 2014

The AMS/NWA High Plains Chapter held a short meeting Tuesday evening, August 6th, after Dr. Karen Kosiba’s pre-conference presentation.   The meeting began a 5:40 PM, and was over by 5:46 PM.  There were 19 Chapter members present.  Treasurer Scott Bryant will send an updated treasurer’s report after the conference.  Secretary Tim Burke reported that he sent a $50 Visa card with a Thank You card to our long time webmaster, Jared Guyer, who recently resigned.  Jared sent a thank-you email to the chapter.  .

The 16th High Plains Conference was a success, with 70 attendees, 7 which were undergraduates, 1 was a graduate student, and 2 attendees were in the Air Force.  There were 2 college students in the Student Paper Competition; both from the University of Nebraska Lincoln and both gave excellent presentations.  This year’s winner of the $500 award was Holly B. Obermeier, who presented “Verification and Analysis of Impact-Based Tornado Warnings in Central Region of the National Weather Service”, which was a synopsis of her thesis.

The speakers were highlighted by three keynoters:   Dr. Karen Kosiba from the Center for Severe Weather Research in Boulder, CO (Tuesday evening), speaking on “Tornado genesis, evolution and structure from fine-scale DOW (Doppler On Wheels mobile radar observations:  What we learned, implications, and future challenges”;  Dr. Matthews Bunkers, the SOO at NWS Rapid City, SD (Wednesday morning), speaking on “Choosing a Universal Mean Wind for Supercell Motion Prediction: Application for Low-Topped and Elevated Storms”; and at the Wednesday evening banquet, Richard Smith, WCM at NWS Norman, OK, gave an entertaining briefing on the “WFO Norman & The May 2013 Tornadoes”.

The treasurer’s report was sent after our meeting, via email.  As of Aug 6th, our Treasury had $5,563.04 in it, with $1,430.00 designated to the Jim Johnson Fund, leaving $4,033.04 as the balance.  The conference had 70 attendees, 32 presenters, 60 attended the banquet and 27 ordered T-shirts.  The income from the conference was $5,585.00 and the expenditures were $4,646.71 (surplus of $938.29!).  Nice job, Hastings staff!  It was decided the 2015 HP conference would be held in Goodland, KS.

The next meeting will be in Norton, and details will be sent.
