Minutes of the High Plains AMS/NWA Chapter Meeting

The AMS/NWA High Plains Chapter held a short meeting Tuesday evening, August 6th, after Dr. Karen Kosiba’s pre-conference presentation. The meeting began a 5:40 PM, and was over by 5:46 PM. There were 19 Chapter members present. Treasurer Scott Bryant will send an updated treasurer’s report after the conference. Secretary Tim Burke reported that he sent a $50 Visa card with a Thank You card to our long time webmaster, Jared Guyer, who recently resigned. Jared sent a thank-you email to the chapter. .
The 16th High Plains Conference was a success, with 70 attendees, 7 which were undergraduates, 1 was a graduate student, and 2 attendees were in the Air Force. There were 2 college students in the Student Paper Competition; both from the University of Nebraska Lincoln and both gave excellent presentations. This year’s winner of the $500 award was Holly B. Obermeier, who presented “Verification and Analysis of Impact-Based Tornado Warnings in Central Region of the National Weather Service”, which was a synopsis of her thesis.
The speakers were highlighted by three keynoters: Dr. Karen Kosiba from the Center for Severe Weather Research in Boulder, CO (Tuesday evening), speaking on “Tornado genesis, evolution and structure from fine-scale DOW (Doppler On Wheels mobile radar observations: What we learned, implications, and future challenges”; Dr. Matthews Bunkers, the SOO at NWS Rapid City, SD (Wednesday morning), speaking on “Choosing a Universal Mean Wind for Supercell Motion Prediction: Application for Low-Topped and Elevated Storms”; and at the Wednesday evening banquet, Richard Smith, WCM at NWS Norman, OK, gave an entertaining briefing on the “WFO Norman & The May 2013 Tornadoes”.
The treasurer’s report was sent after our meeting, via email. As of Aug 6th, our Treasury had $5,563.04 in it, with $1,430.00 designated to the Jim Johnson Fund, leaving $4,033.04 as the balance. The conference had 70 attendees, 32 presenters, 60 attended the banquet and 27 ordered T-shirts. The income from the conference was $5,585.00 and the expenditures were $4,646.71 (surplus of $938.29!). Nice job, Hastings staff! It was decided the 2015 HP conference would be held in Goodland, KS.
The next meeting will be in Norton, and details will be sent.
