The High Plains NWA/AMS Chapter Minutes

24 February 2017

The NWA/AMS High Plains Chapter held a virtual meeting over the phone on Friday, February 24th.  13 chapter members were able to attend.  The meeting began around 100pm and consisted of the following...  Greg Carbin (from the Weather Prediction Center) was courteous enough to once again present his top 10 Meteorological Memories of the past year.  A copy of his presentation can be found here or see attachments with the original e-mail.  Next, the new High Plains President (Jeremy Martin) and new Vice President (Jacyln Gomez) started the official meeting.  Only two topics were discussed during the meeting.  The first consisted of Aaron Johnson providing an update for the 2017 High Plains Conference in Dodge City, KS.  The conference will be held at the Dodge City Community College and the banquet at the Boot Hill Conference Hall.  Dates are August 9,10 with all keynoters confirmed.  They are Karen Kosiba, Mike Coniglio, Chris Strager, and Chris Carsons.  There was a discussion on whether or not to continue the student competition this year due to low turnout the last several years.  Consensus was not to push for this, although student presenters will still be welcome.  A call for abstracts is expected to go out mid to late March with Group Travel due by mid may.  30 rooms have been blocked off at the Hampton Inn next to where the Banquet will occur.  This block will be held until May 2nd.  A webpage for the conference is anticipated to go live by June 1st.  If you have any questions about the conference, the points of contacts are Wesley Hovorka and Laren Renyolds.  The second topic of the meeting was an update on the Jim Johnson Scholarship.  Matt Gerard (Dodge City), Rick Ewald (Hastings), David Floyd (Goodland) , and Shawn Jacobs (North Platte) have taken up the scholarship announcements at their respective offices.  They will be handling the scholarship process.  No other new business or action items were proposed for this meeting.  The next meeting is expected to be sometime in April.
